Eastern Snowball (Viburnum opulus ‘Sterile’) Eastern Snowball (Viburnum opulus ‘Sterile’), also known as the Sterile European Cranberrybush or Common Snowball Bush, is a classic flowering shrub prized for its dense clusters of white, snowball-like blooms and upright, symmetrical form. It delivers a striking focal point in spring and offers a bold, old-world charm to garden settings. Distinctive Features This deciduous shrub reaches 8 to 12 feet tall and wide with a rounded, upright growth habit. Its large, round flower heads emerge pale green and transition to white as they mature in late spring. Because it is sterile, it does not set fruit, allowing energy to go entirely into foliage and bloom production. Its maple-like leaves turn burgundy in fall, adding seasonal interest.
