Accolade Cherry (Prunus subhirtella ‘Accolade’) Accolade Cherry is a graceful flowering cherry celebrated for clouds of semi-double, shell-pink blossoms in early spring, handsome bark, and orange-red fall color; its broadly spreading, arching habit delivers four-season interest for small to medium landscapes. Distinctive Features Soft pink blooms open from deep pink buds on bare branches, often with a light fragrance; polished bark, fine spring twigging, and clean, dark green summer foliage complete a long display before vibrant autumn tones. Growing Conditions Sun Exposure: Full sun for best bloom and color; light afternoon shade in hot summers. Soil: Fertile, well-drained loam; tolerates clay if drainage is improved. Water: Even moisture; water deeply during establishment and prolonged dry spells. USDA Hardiness Zones: 5 to 8. Mature Size: About 20 to 30 ft tall and 20 to 30 ft wide. Bloom Time: Early to mid spring. Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral, about 6.0 to 7.0. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Showy spring blossom makes a statement near entries and patios. Specimen Tree: Broad, arching canopy anchors lawns and mixed borders. Allee or Streetside: Repeats color and form along drives and walkways. Wildlife Support: Spring flowers for pollinators, small fruits for birds. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Keep root zone evenly moist the first 2 to 3 years; deep soak in drought. Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to shape; remove dead, crossing, or cankered wood and avoid heavy winter cuts. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if growth is weak. Mulching: 2 to 3 in organic mulch over the root zone, keeping it off the trunk. Notes: Site with good air flow to reduce leaf spot; monitor for aphids, borers, and canker; avoid waterlogged soils. Why Choose Accolade Cherry? Abundant Blossom: Semi-double pink flowers create a dramatic spring display. Graceful Form: Broad, arching habit offers elegant structure. Seasonal Color: Fresh spring bloom followed by rich fall foliage. Manageable Size: Ideal proportions for residential landscapes. Plant Accolade Cherry where full sun and good drainage support reliable bloom and a refined, four-season silhouette.
