Compact Korean Azalea (Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense ‘Compact’) Compact Korean Azalea (Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense ‘Compact’) is a hardy, deciduous azalea that offers vibrant purple-pink spring flowers, good mildew resistance, and a tidy, mounding form. A more compact selection of the species, this cultivar is known for its cold tolerance and adaptability, making it an excellent fit for northern landscapes, woodland gardens, and mixed shrub borders where space is limited but impact is desired. Distinctive Features This compact form of the Korean azalea typically reaches 2 to 3 feet in height and width. Its funnel-shaped flowers bloom in mid to late spring and are a striking rose-purple with slightly ruffled edges. The foliage emerges green and develops a rich reddish-purple hue in fall before dropping, offering multi-season interest. Its mildew-resistant leaves and adaptable growth habit make it especially valuable in landscapes where air circulation is limited. Growing Conditions Sun Exposure: Performs best in partial shade; tolerates morning sun with afternoon protection. Soil: Prefers acidic, well-drained soils high in organic matter. Water: Moderate; requires consistent moisture, particularly during blooming and establishment. Humidity: Tolerates a range of humidity levels; good resistance to leaf mildew in shaded conditions. USDA Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8; one of the most cold-hardy azaleas available. Ideal Uses Woodland Gardens: Naturalistic form and early bloom time make it a standout in filtered light areas. Borders and Edging: Low height and rounded habit suit the front of mixed beds and walkways. Foundation Plantings: Adds color and seasonal charm without overwhelming small spaces. Mass Plantings: Creates a dense, colorful hedge or grouping in spring. Native-Inspired Gardens: Blends well with other eastern U.S. natives and pollinator-friendly shrubs. Low Maintenance Care Compact Korean Azalea is low-maintenance and highly adaptable. Its good disease resistance and cold hardiness make it easy to grow in a variety of settings with minimal attention. Watering: Maintain consistent moisture during dry periods, especially in spring and summer. Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape if needed; avoid heavy pruning into old wood. Fertilizing: Apply an acid-formulated fertilizer in early spring; compost mulch can also help enrich soil. Pest and Disease Resistance: Resistant to powdery mildew and generally pest-free in appropriate conditions. Winter Care: Mulch in late fall to insulate roots and conserve moisture through winter.
